Food is more than just fuel for the body; it is a vital part of our culture, identity, and social interactions. Our relationship with food is complex and multifaceted. We follow various food trends, celebrate it as a ritual, eat ever so healthy and nutritious, quarrel about fast and slow food, and envy what others have on their plates.
The show “An Ideal Meal” brings together 12 artists, whose works can be visually connected to food in an instant. But it is also their critical engagement on a multitude of metaphorical levels that makes them potent ingredients. Ingredients of a meal, which might turn out to be ideal or, perhaps, the opposite.
The title is inspired by Oscar Wilde’s play “An Ideal Husband,” which satirizes society’s obsession with social ideals. The curation comments ironically on our idealized world in which we agree upon common ideals and subsequently spend immense effort to bring ourselves in line with them.
See you next Friday!
